In speaking or in writing we use words to express our thoughts. But these words could not express our thoughts unless they were arranged in a certain way. After arranged these words in a specific way, we will have a sentence.
What is a sentence?
A sentence is a group of words that arranged in a specific order and it expresses a thought.
Examples:
When we look at these sentences like:
Ø Fire burns.
Ø John reads.
Ø Go thou.
Ø Do you work?
Ø What a big boy you are!
If we look at one of these sentences; for example, "Fire burns," we see that it consists of two parts:
Fire /burns.
The first part is that which we speak about. This part of the sentence is called the subject. The second part states something about the subject. This part of the sentence is called the predicate. Every sentence consists of two parts, subject and predicate. Every sentence must have subject and predicate.
In order to write English well, we must capitalize the first litter of every sentence.
A sentence stating a fact should be followed by a period.
Fire bums.
This group of words is a sentence, because it expresses a thought. Of this sentence the word fire is the subject, because it is that which we talk about. The word burns is the predicate, because it is that which is said about the subject.
Frogs croak. Study pays. Thunder rolls. Soldiers march. Wood burns. Winds howl. Birds fly. Light shines. Cocks crow. Ducks swim. Mary studies. John plays. Children sleep. Rover barks. Flowers bloom. Trees bud. Winter passes. Snow melts. Rivers flow.
(The pupil should be required to write and analyze similar sentences.)
The Classes of Words.
If we took a look on these sentences:
Ø Fire burns.
Ø John works.
Ø Horses run.
If we look at the subjects and predicates of these sentences, we see that the subjects, fire, John, horses, are names of persons or things, but that the predicates, burns, works, run, are not. These words, then, are different in character, and express ideas different in kind. Because words differ in character, we divide them into groups or classes. These groups or classes of words are generally called parts of speech, because each group or class is a part of our spoken or written language or speech. All the words in the English language are divided into eight classes or parts of speech.
We will talk about them in more details in the next articles. We hop to enjoy learning and master English grammar in a good and more clear and effective way with us here in Learning English Online.
