Modern poetry is characterize by many things .It is ironical, paradoxical , full of tension and ambiguity . Moreover it is psychological .It is traditional as it mixes or fuses past and present, the tragic and the comic.the mythic and realistic.
it also mixes freedom of form (or formlessness initiated by the Romantics) and order or restrain in the poems.
Thus modern poetry is a mixture of classical (traditional) rules as well as romantic principles .
the range is widened to include all traditions  and cultures .
Modern poetry   attacked  the moral values of the Victorians .  Modern poets uses free verse and thy are frank in treating sex and religion .M.P marked by allusions and symbolism. It reveals modern man's inner conflict  as will as his modern dilemma .
Thus M P is metaphoric,ambiguous,highly symbolic,objective,ironical,paradoxical,traditional and etc...

Modern poetry   is interested in the problems which face their society especially war, mechanization, industrialization ,material gains and etc..... .
Modern poetry  is concerned with form rather than content. Form leads to meaning (content) .
According to Matthew Arnold "poetry is a criticism  of life under the conditions fixed for such a criticism by the laws of poetic beauty" .By "criticism of life", Arnold means that the noble and profound  application of ideas to life" and by laws of poetic truth and poetic beauty" ,he means "truth and seriousness of substance and matter 'and felicity and perfection of diction and manner.
